Drake's Burn

This is an awful mom story....I've had a couple of these instances that I've been negligent as a mother....I just feel really bad! The one with Crew was the falling out of the truck story. If you haven't heard it, you should check it out, it's a sad mommy day!

Well, this time's not quite as much my fault. But I wish I would have paid closer attention to what was going on in the kitchen! Friday night we were making breakfast for dinner. I had french toast on my electric griddle on the island, and then I was at the stove, with my back towards the island, working on bacon and eggs. My boys climb up on the island often. We always tell them to get down because they could get hurt, it's not good manners, and they might knock something down. Drake apparently climbed up on the island. He says to smell the french toast because it smelled so yummy. Well, then he somehow slipped, and burnt his face on the griddle, and then fell on the floor. I ignored his crying because the boys get hurt all day long, or are fighting, and if I ran every-time they cried, I'd never get anything done. Finally, I asked Rett to help him calm down. When Rett came in the kitchen 1-2 minutes later, he noticed how red his cheek was. We got it under cold water, put an ice pack on it, put some burn gel bandage things on it, and hoped he'd be ok. And he is ok. I just felt so bad that we didn't help the poor kid out as soon as it happened. We got some silvadine from a doctor and have been using the handy aloe vera plant and it's healing. The first day or two he was in a lot of pain, but he seems to be fine now.

This picture is three days after the burn. So, it is healing and getting better. Drake made the picture look like he's dying. He was in tons of pain, but today, he's actually doing fine. But he's a great poser!

It's kind of funny because Saturday we were in a store that had a metal bar connected to the check out. I had just finished explaining to the lady what happened to his face, and he started crying. He got his arm stuck in the bar. It took me a few minutes to get his arm out without hurting him. The lady told me as we left "You better watch him more closely"! Wow! He's a monkey, and he and Crew are always doing stuff that I'm amazed hasn't resulted in broken bones. They're boys. They're crazy. I feel like I do watch them pretty well. But it's nearly impossible to keep a close eye on them constantly! And even if I do, they still end up doing stuff that hurts them. It just usually isn't this bad!

We wanted to keep the stuff on his face at night without him rubbing it all over his pillow and blankets, so we thought we'd put gauze on it and then wrap it up. That didn't really last. Drake hated it. And wined and cried nonstop, until he finally took it off and threw it at me! I was actually kind of ok, because he wouldn't fall asleep with it on, and it was getting pretty late for him to be up. But I thought he looked so cute, that I made him put it back on for a minute today so I could take a picture. He obviously didn't think it needed documentation like I did!

Grandma Debbie's Birthday

Grandma Debbie's birthday was last week. (Debbie is Rett's Dad's wife, just so everyone knows who we're talking about!) We decided to have a little get together to celebrate. We had a wonderful dinner and cupcakes and icecream. YUM! Debbie loves purple, so I made purple flowery cupcakes. We had Debbie's daughter, Summer, and her family over too. It was tons of fun to see everyone and the kids had a wild blast! Poor Rett had a super crazy day yesterday, full of meetings, a final test for his Business Law class, and more meetings. He didn't get a rest for more than a minute until 9pm :( He missed the party too :( We wish he'd been able to be around for more of the day, but we did save a plate and dessert for him.

Running with Dad

The boys are at an age where they can't quite run or ride bikes while we go on runs. But they really want to. Crew actually does ok. I'm sure he could run a mile and be fine. Drake gets tired super fast though. Usually when one of us is going on a run outside, they ask to go. So we tell them after we're done running, we will come back and grab them for a shorter run. Crew absolutely loves it! They always go too far, and then Drake struggles on the way back though. One evening I had to grab the camera because I think it's so stinking cute!

Hard Work

I am blessed to have been surrounded by many hardworking men in my life. I cannot think of growing up without thinking of my Dad and what a hard worker he was. He never lived a day of his life when I knew him that he didn't work hard on something. He loved to be outdoors and when he wasn't working a job, usually worked around the house or on some project on our property. He taught me the importance of a clean bedroom growing up. I remember one morning he went past my room and noticed I had cleaned it up and told me he was glad it was so nice. And we talked about how you can feel the spirit when you are in a clean home. It's funny, because Rett is sometimes irritated by my obsessive cleanliness. I wasn't always clean. And I seem to remember some crazy childhood memory of my Dad throwing my mattress off a balcony outside because my sister and I wouldn't keep our bed made. Maybe the combination of those two very different experiences helped create a habit of cleanliness in my life. At any rate, I have probably matured into a more balanced type of clean freak. I will admit that one of the most irritating things when Rett and I first got married, and something I actually started arguments about, which is super ridiculous, is where he put the ketchup away in the fridge. Now, I am so grateful for him helping clean up after dinner, that I don't even care where it goes. So, I've learned to relax a little about things that don't actually matter. I've learned to accept the fact that the house won't always be perfect. I've learned that sometimes family time is just more important than the house cleaning. I have learned that I'm a happier person though, if I exercise and stay on top of my house work. So a balance between those things is what makes life around our house run smoothest. But I am grateful to my Dad for helping me learn to take care of your home and property and make it nice so that you are more able to feel the spirit in your life.

Part of what started me thinking about this is Rett. He is a lineman. He works hard. Some days it is physically exhausting for him to go to work. But he rarely complains. And he works his tail off so that I can be home with our boys. This week, he worked a regular 8 hours on Monday and Tuesday. He came home after work on Tuesday, worked on his school work, had dinner with the family, and then went to Young Mens at 7pm. He didn't get home from that until 9:30ish and we went to bed around 10pm. Then, he responded to a phone call about a power outage at 1:30am, and worked from then until his shift ended that evening. He again, came home, had dinner, did chores, and went to bed a little early that night to catch up on sleep. Only, he got called out at 10pm Wednesday night. Again, worked through the night and all the next day. Thursday night, he went to sleep early, and gratefully, got a full nights sleep, only to wake up Friday morning and head back to work. We're grateful it's Friday, so that we can spend some time with him this weekend. But through all of this, he remains patient with the boys when he gets home from work, spends some time with them playing and talking before he goes to bed, and never makes us feel bad that he's putting in so much time and effort at work, while we are at home. I do feel really guilty sometimes that I am home playing with the boys or sleeping at night, while he is working. But it's never because he makes me feel guilty. I have had to let go of a lot of anxiety when he's at work, because it's not the most safe job in the world.

The school work thing that I mentioned, is Rett's MBA. He and I both finished our Bachelor's degrees before we had the boys. It was so much easier then! If we were doing homework, we could sit together and study. Now, he gets home from work and the boys just want to play with him. We're glad he's only taking a six week course at a time. And he's spreading it out over five years, so only two classes a year. The sacrifice for us is hard for six weeks at a time, but it actually goes by quickly. And I'm hoping this will eventually mean he won't have to work so hard physically at some point in time. I do not think there is anything wrong with physical labor. I actually really respect men who do those types of jobs. It is hard work. You have to deal with the freezing cold weather, snow, rain, and ice during the winter, and then the extreme heat of summer. But since it is so hard, I appreciate the fact that Rett may be able to use his mind more than his body at some point in his career.

The other thing about Rett that I love, but sometimes dread, is how hard he works around the house. Last summer, we put in so many hours working on our yard. It was crazy. The man would come home from working outside all day, then we would hit the yard work until dark. Sometimes I would hope the boys would need some help with something in the house so that I could have a break. I feel like I can be a hard worker, and keep up with him for the most part, but sometimes he just goes and goes and I am just not as tough as he is. On weekends, he cannot stand to just sit around the house. He has to have a project to work on.

If he's not working for a job, working around the house, or working on school work, it's a pretty good bet he's doing something with the dogs. Either out training with them, or studying about training them. I am sure he thinks I hate the whole dog thing. I actually don't. And I actually love that he is so passionate about it. It makes him happy, and I feel like he deserves something to make him happy since he's such a hard worker. I just wish he had a little bit of laziness so that I don't feel so bad about myself :)

Anyway, I could go on and on of examples of hard workers in my life. But these two men have probably been the closest examples of hard work to me. I am so grateful for them. And as a mother of two little boys, I hope and pray that Crew and Drake will follow the examples of their father, grandfathers, uncles, and other wonderful male examples of hard work.

The boys have looked at pictures of Grandpa Sam lately, and asked questions. I think mostly because he wears a cowboy hat in a lot of the pictures. But this week, we've talked about him more than normal. My boys often mention when people are dead that they will come back alive when they are resurrected. So, they mentioned this one day about Grandpa Sam. I agreed, that he would and that they would get to meet him. They asked questions about him, and we talked about how much they would like him and how much he loves them.

Sometimes I get sad to think that Rett and my boys have never had the pleasure of knowing this great part of my life. And then I get grateful for the gospel and that they will have the chance one day. I know my Dad and Rett would have gotten along well. I know my boys would have loved Grandpa Sam. I also know that there is a plan larger than this life on earth. And I am grateful to know that one day, we will all be together again.

I am grateful for Rett and his hard work. I want him to know how much I appreciate his sacrifices for me. And I want him to know that I love him. I hope one day, our boys can look back at growing up and have as many fond memories of their Daddy working hard as I do of mine.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day! From the Sage Family! We hope everyone has a wonderful day and knows how much they are loved! We took this picture of the boys to send to all the grandparents. It was one of, oh, hundreds, that happened to turn out. The boys, mainly Drake, didn't really want to take pictures that day. And we wanted to do one outside, but it was too windy and cold and they were so sad. So I was just grateful to get this one decent picture! But I'm a slacker, so they just got sent out today! They'll be late. So sorry! But just know we love you all and hope this day and all the others are full of love! We are so grateful for so many wonderful family members, friends, neighbors, and people who love us! I hope you all know how much you mean to us! I hope that we never take the special people in our lives for granted! Enjoy your day! Hugs and Kisses!

We also found this super cute idea for a Stick Em Up Valentines that we made for the boys to share with all their friends!

Zink

Zink ended his derby career with 30 points. That put him in the Top 10 in the US. We were pretty excited with how well he did. He is now back on the winter trip with Kenny & Marcy. We hope he pays good attention and learns lots. It's a big jump to the next level!

This is a page from the December 2011 Issue of Retriever News. Zink is listed with his registered name, Elmingo's Little Man. He had 1.76 points per start.

Here's the Elmingo Gang in Texas. Zink is on the far left of the picture.

Bear River's Black Out

This is Stormy! Her registered name is Bear River's Black Out. She's our newest addition. She was born November 16th and we brought her home January 7th. The first couple days she was so timid and just laid around, walking through the house slowly. We were a little worried at first. But it only took her a couple days to warm up and now she's a normal little puppy. She seemed tiny compared to previous puppies we brought home at that age. The boys, of course, love her! She gets plenty of attention and loves to chase the boys around the house. It gets quite LOUD! Her new favorite place to hang out is in our throw blanket basket. It's near the fire, and apparently she's decided it is a warm, soft place to hang out! The first time she was in the basket I thought I'd left her outside too long, and we don't have a fenced yard, and I was freaking out looking for her. Rett did the same thing a couple days later. Now she's always there when she needs a rest. Her name is a result of the crazy wind storm that hit the Ogden/Weber area last month. Rett worked for days straight trying to get people's power back on down there and since the overtime paid for her, Rett decided that she would have a name to remind him of the storm. The Bear River runs through our area. Just so it makes sense to everyone!

The last few months, we had Chief, our oldest dog who is retired from the games and lives to hunt with Rett; Zink, who is our Field Trialer and who has been back and forth from our home to trainers during his short two years of life; and Hook, a pup who we were dog sitting for friends. Chief is a great dog. He's clean in his kennel. Almost always waits to go to the bathroom until you let him out, and is a great well mannered dog. Zink is a terribly messy dog. He never waits for you to let him out, even if you let him out. Hook was a puppy, so he was still learning how to be clean. Zink and Hook were eating twice a day and Chief only once a day. All three were on different dog foods. And some had supplements. I was taking care of dogs, airing dogs, cleaning kennels, and throwing ducks so much. Of course Rett did chores at night, but some days I felt like all I did was take care of dogs. Rett will say I'm a dog hater. Not so. I am busy with the boys and house and everything else, so sometimes I get a little frustrated with so much time going to dogs. But really, I love them, just not quite as much as Rett does! Anyway, we took Hook home on December 30th. I drove Zink to Colorado on January 3rd. So for just a few short days we had one, really easy dog. And I wasn't even here to enjoy it because I went to Utah to visit family! We are only at 2 dogs at home now, and they are not that bad. Rett got me a super cute pair of Bogs for Christmas. Bogs are a fancy mud boot. Mine are purple. I love them. I also told him that I wouldn't complain about dogs anymore because of them. It's much nicer to clean kennels and tramp through snow to throw ducks when you have a good pair of boots. And a very exciting piece of news is that Rett found a steal of a deal on a nice freezer on KSL for his shop! So now all the dead ducks that were taking up space in the bottom of my freezer are outside in the shop! YAY! More space for our food!

I have to say, I love that Rett is so passionate about the dogs. He loves them. And I complain. But I'm so glad he has something he enjoys doing. Life would be so miserable if he didn't have anything to look forward to. And we can do stuff with the dogs as a family. And that is what matters most to me! So welcome Stormy to our crazy home! We're glad to have you!

Shooting with Dad

Rett and Grandpa Kip took the boys to the shooting range a while ago. The boys got a great lesson on gun safety, which I loved. And they got to help Dad shoot a 22 pistol. They loved it and kept asking if they could keep shooting!

Christmas Lights

We took the boys to Temple Square in Salt Lake to see the Christmas Lights. We went with Grandma Teresa and TJ and Megan. It was lot's of fun. They had so many different nativity's from all over the world. It was so beautiful. The boys always love seeing where Mom and Dad were married. It's especially nice this time of year though. I am just amazed. I was a lazy bumb this year and did a really poor job of decorating our tree with the Christmas lights. They were just kind of draped over the tree. At Temple Square every bulb is wrapped tightly and perfectly around a tree branch. So pretty. And I can't even do one small tree right! At least my boys think our tree is pretty though! And the boys had so much fun with everyone there. Afterwards we went to a great bakery and had soup and sandwiches and amazing desserts! It was a great night!

Sledding Behind Horses

Some cute neighbors called one day to invite the boys to go sledding behind horses at their house. It was fun. They also got to ride on the horses, and they loved that too. We don't have tons of snow right now, it's kind of old left over snow from a huge storm around Thanksgiving where we got a foot or so in a day and a half. But it was enough to give the kids some fun rides. And they had a blast. We're glad we have such great neighbors and the space to do fun things like this!
